How to Get the Most Out of Our Classes

Gustavo Machado Academy promotes encouragement and greatness in all our students.

At Gustavo Machado Academy, we want to share the Gentle Art with the world and watch all our students master the craft. That’s why we’ve created this post to give some helpful tips and advice to any beginning white belts that want the best experience and to get the most from their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes.

Introduce Yourself and Make Friends

One of the best things you can do to get the most from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu courses is show up early and introduce yourself to other students. BJJ students and Professors are very encouraging individuals, and not only will they help you master basic jiu-jitsu moves, but they’ll also become your lifelong friends. You’ll be much more comfortable on the mat learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu if you’ve developed positive, trusting relationships with your fellow students.

Ask Questions

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is not an easy sport to learn. There are many technical maneuvers and it can be confusing at times. Never be afraid to speak up and ask questions. You’ll become a much better BJJ student if you ask questions anytime you’re confused. It’s likely you’re not the only one with the same question. The best way to improve and advance to a higher belt is by fully understanding Brazilian jiu-jitsu basic moves, fundamentals, and theory. Ask as many questions as necessary to develop that understanding.

Give 100% Everyday

BJJ is tough and exhausting. Every time you step on that mat, you should be giving your all, whether it’s for class or a competition. You’ll get the most from our classes if you give your most to the classes. This includes working outside of class by practicing jiu-jitsu moves or getting personal lessons to continue growing your BJJ skills. BJJ is one of the best ways to learn perseverance and teach you to win at life.

Don’t Give Up

We encourage you to enter our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school with set goals in mind. As you start classes, actively work towards those goals every day. Goals will give you something to work towards and encourage you to not give up. As we’ve mentioned before, BJJ is a difficult art, and there will be some jiu-jitsu moves that will seem nearly impossible to execute, but as long as you keep trying your hardest and persevering, you’ll be able to achieve anything. The feeling of success that follows will be well worth the hard work.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a wonderful form of self-defense, but it can also teach you important life lessons. To get the most out of your BJJ classes, simply apply yourself and engage fully with the Gentle Art. As long as you immerse yourself in the art and strive to understand as much as you can, you’ll be a wonderful student and have much success.
