1. Ensure Cleanliness

Ensuring good personal hygiene is one of the most important things you can do before each BJJ class. BJJ involves being close-up to one another, so showering and brushing your teeth will ensure that you do not smell bad during the class and while sparring with your partner. In addition, bad breath and body odor can put off people from training with you.

2. Trim Your Nails

As seen, BJJ can be quite up and personal, especially when you are sparring with a partner. To ensure that you do not accidentally injure anyone, it is recommended that you keep both your fingernails and toenails trimmed, as sparring is done barefoot.

3. Dress Appropriately

Before each BJJ class, you should ensure that you are dressed appropriately. This means that you should wear clothes that are comfortable enough for you to train and spar in. It can be a t-shirt and shorts, or if you have been training in BJJ for a long time, it would be best to get yourself a BJJ Gi.

4. Try to Relax

Tension before a BJJ class is quite common, especially if you are a beginner. We would advise you not to overthink anything and try to go with the flow. You can listen to some music or even do stretches to calm yourself and prepare for the class simultaneously. You will soon realize that relaxing is one of the most important things to learn in BJJ.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a very difficult sport, but it can also be very rewarding in multiple areas of your life. If you want to perfect techniques, you’ll need to apply yourself and work outside of class to see substantial growth. Gustavo Machado Academy has courses for every belt level, and is ready to help you grow as a martial artist. Enroll today to get started!
