4 Habits of Highly Successful BJJ Students
Develop these four habits to become a successful Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student
If you’re just starting out at a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy, you know how difficult it can be. You may see talented students and begin to wonder, “How did they get so good?” Well, we’ve analyzed some of the best students in our academy and noticed four habits in successful BJJ students.
Practicing Outside of Scheduled Classes
The most successful BJJ students and black belts practice regularly outside of class. If you’re looking to improve as much as possible, we encourage you to take private classes for additional training. Your understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques will significantly increase and you’ll be a better student for it. Successful BJJ students are dedicated to the art and take the time to learn everything about the sport, from history to fundamentals.
Challenging Yourself
Successful BJJ students make it a habit to challenge themselves on the mat. It’s good for you to spar and train with higher belts to learn advanced jiu-jitsu techniques. To become successful in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it’s important for you to continue pushing your own personal limits (without harming yourself, of course) to continue growing. BJJ isn’t mastered overnight, and it takes some people longer than others to learn jiu-jitsu techniques, but those who challenge themselves, work hard, and persevere are always successful.
Exploring All of BJJ
The world of jiu-jitsu is expansive. As a martial art, there are many varieties and avenues you can travel after learning basic techniques. For example, many students will move into a No Gi style or work towards becoming a UFC fighter. It’s not a bad idea to explore all that BJJ has to offer and find a path that suits your interests the best. The most successful students seek to understand BJJ as a whole, which includes its many paths. Don’t be afraid to travel down another Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu road.
Relaxing
Yes, BJJ can be demanding and consuming. Which is why it’s essential to make sure you relax and have a set down time. It’s not healthy to not make time for yourself to recoup, especially if you’ve been training a lot. Plus, we’re well aware that BJJ isn’t all you do – many students are in school, or working, or are parents and have other responsibilities. When you incorporate everything that goes on outside of the academy, it’s even more important to ensure you make time to properly relax and reset your body.
There are many ways to become successful in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At the end of the day, successful BJJ students simply apply themselves to the art as much as they can, and want to be successful. If you have an honest desire to be great at BJJ, you will innately develop some of these habits. Explore our blog to read more articles about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
