The Ultimate Guide to Perfecting Your BJJ Technique
Master Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques at Gustavo Machado BJJ Academy!
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can’t be learned overnight. It takes time, practice, and dedication to truly perfect BJJ techniques. That being said, there are a few tricks of the trade to make your journey a little easier.
Keep a Training Journal
A BJJ training journal will not only remind you what you’ve learned, but it will also point out details you have missed. At the end of each class, you should try to reflect on the techniques you learned that day. As you start to specifically explain how to execute each, questions will pop up about arm placement, weight transfer, leg positions, etc. This will force you to pay more attention in your next course. Learning those details, along with being able to observe those details, will drastically improve your BJJ techniques.
Visualize Techniques
It’s been proven that visualizing yourself doing something is nearly as effective as actually practicing the action. By visualizing a technique, you’ll begin to notice those details we mentioned before, and learn execution from start to finish. Visualizing techniques is also useful for when you don’t have time to physically practice techniques – you could double your training time and squeeze in this exercise during idle periods, such as your morning commute.
Drill Frequently
Drilling is a popular and constructive exercise used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Essentially, it’s repeating a move over and over again until it feels natural. The key to repetitive drilling is to do it slowly at first to ensure that all the details are applied flawlessly, and then get faster later on. As long as you’re practicing the technique properly, drilling will help you grasp techniques very quickly, and will make them easier to apply once the movements feel innate.
Set Goals and Reach Milestones
With goals and milestones in mind, you’ll practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques with a purpose. Hitting those goals and milestones will encourage you to strive for more, and sometimes missing those goals will be the motivation you need to work harder. Your mind is your greatest asset – use that to your advantage to continuously improve on techniques.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a very difficult sport, but it can also be very rewarding in multiple areas of your life. If you want to perfect techniques, you’ll need to apply yourself and work outside of class to see substantial growth.
